What this means is that you chat with anyone without having to reveal your identity. It is believed that the popularity of chat rooms may not be unconnected to the anonymity feature it offers its users. Also, the traditional chat rooms are not designed to cater to modern-day needs.
Also, it should be noted that country based hat rooms are used by several people in different parts of the world. Talking real-time with strangers is one thing that is still quite common. This is because the purpose they serve is quite different from the one served by the instant messaging platforms. This, however, does not fully justify the reason why Chatrooms seem to have declined over the past 10 years or so. This is large as a result of the rise of other instant communication platforms such as WhatsApp and Skype. There has however been a decline in the number of chat rooms that exist over the past decade or so. Chat rooms have always had the notorious reputation of being a safe space for geeks to converge and discuss the things that tickle their fancy.
