The district requires its mechanics and its transportation director be certified to drive for this reason, Nichol said.In May 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark Morrison learned about the need for volunteer Blood Transportation Specialists and since then he has "drove” towards the opportunity to carry precious cargo to patients in need.

When the going gets tough, Yale calls on its other employees to drive the buses. Drivers with 10 or more years get a $500 annual bonus. Five to nine years earns a driver a $250 annual bonus. Drivers who've been with Yale for between one and four years get a $100 annual bonus. It provides free childcare to drivers and has added some paid holidays in recent years. "We've been trying to be creative in trying to recruit and retain individuals." "There are days where it's our turn in the barrel," Nicholl said. Nicholl said the district is currently fully staffed, but that isn't always the case. Pay starts about $12.30 an hour, and the district has about 14 permanent drivers, said Ken Nicholl, the district's superintendent. Unlike Port Huron Area School District and Marysville Public Schools, Yale Public Schools employs its drivers directly. "It takes the right person, and sometimes trying to find that person is hard." "It's a difficult job, there's a lot of responsibility on that driver," Hurley said. It's a tough job, that requires split shifts and its schedule isn't so friendly to having another part time job, not to mention the rigors of being responsible for so many kids each day, Hurley said. Hurley said the driver shortage isn't a crisis, but the demand is noticeable.

Winters are more manageable, Hurley said. There are crunch times at various points in the year, like in the springtime when many field trips are planned. And like First Student, Marysville School Bus is always hiring. They are tasked with learning new routes, or assigned as an aid on a bus to help another driver. Hurley said any extra drivers it has on a given day are still paid. Marysville School bus also provides training free to its drivers. The company has 15 regular drivers and two substitutes. The company starts substitute bus drivers at $15.70 per hour, up from $15.32 last year, Hurley said.
